Throughout the 20th century, countless Irish women who found themselves pregnant outside of marriage were coerced into giving their babies up for adoption by the church and the state. These women were abandoned by the society meant to protect them. Their children were secretly punished under harsh Catholic rule, largely adopted out of the country and their legal identity concealed.
Prior to personal genealogical records becoming widely accessible, Dublin adoptee Marise Keane searches for her birth mother, navigating the misogynistic landscape of Ireland’s past. Marise traverses a winding path of roadblocks and political dead ends, armed with only her mother’s name and place of birth in hand.
This independently produced feature documentary ONLY CHILD, is an 86-minute part personal, part investigative story that chronicles Marise's journey throughout Ireland, India and Canada. Her story is at times heart wrenching and tense, yet ultimately one of revelation and hope.
